U.S. Major Studio Film Entertainment Revenue Will Approach $42 Billion By 2011

Worldwide, people are watching more films than ever - and investors are watching filmmakers too, betting more than $10 billion in private equity on studio profitability between 2004 and 2007. Soaring costs and tightening consumer budgets have been pinching margins but new growth from the emergence of Blu-Ray as the dominant high-definition disc format combined with continued expansion of new revenue streams, such as electronic distribution and rental kiosks are easing that crunch - according to Film Entertainment Worldwide: The Private Equity Era, a new management report from Adams Media Research and Screen Digest.

Total worldwide feature film revenue for major U.S. studios is expected to soar from $34.9 billion in 2007 to $41.6 billion by the end of 2011 – with the U.S. contributing nearly half of that, or $20.4 billion in revenue. Growth over that time will be driven by electronic sales and rentals, which will average 14.6% growth annually from their current small base. Growth in sales of physical media will be more important since they represent more than 50% of total film revenue.

The average film budget for Motion Picture Association (MPA) members – once the new private equity money is factored in – grew from $46.9 million to $63.2 million between 2004 and 2007, inflating total MPA film expenses from $9.7 billion to nearly $13.2 billion over that time, an average of about 10% annually. Meanwhile, worldwide revenue from those films shrank from $36.6 billion in 2004 to $34.9 billion in 2007. With worldwide revenue only set to grow at about 6% annually between 2007 and 2011 it is clear that studios cannot keep increasing spending at the rates they have over the past few years.

Sony Pictures Classics Acquires Atom Egoyan's Film, 'Adoration'

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired U.S. rights, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand to Atom Egoyan's eleventh film "Adoration." "Adoration" re-teams the Oscar-nominated director ("The Sweet Hereafter") with producer Robert Lantos ("Eastern Promises") who has been involved in seven of Egoyan's films and re-teams Lantos with Sony Pictures Classics. Their last collaboration was on "Being Julia" which garnered an Oscar nomination for its star, Annette Bening in 2005. Then an exotic woman revels her true identity and the truth about Simon's family emerges. Director of photography is Paul Sarossy, production designer is Phillip Barker, costume designer is Debra Hanson and Susan Shipton is editor.

A successfully produced and marketed film can be big business for everyone involved. But for first-time film producers, the process can be daunting, requiring knowledge of everything from scripting to promotion. Even the movie poster plays an important role in sparking audience interest -- but it's also a piece on which new producers are more likely to cut corners.

And the company is not kidding around: Visual Champagne is even giving every participant a Nikon D40 and two lenses, valued at $800 and sponsored by the Motion Picture Technology & Techniques Corporation.

For those new to film production, the workshop is designed to instill lifelong skills in photography and design, save thousands of dollars on first films, and help emerging producers communicate more effectively with their marketing teams on future films. And, according to Bruno, the mix of information his firm offers workshop participants can't be found anywhere else.

Digital Photography & Movie Design workshop participants will learn digital photography basics, including: photo composition, lighting, color harmony and shooting for compositing; graphic design fundamentals, including layout and design, effective use of typography, compositing techniques and effective use of image processing; and a thorough introduction to the history and practical use of movie art. The Future of Film Distribution

The unique documentary film LEADING TO WAR is redefining conventional film distribution. Praised by the German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung as a "staggering film," the 72-minute documentary, constructed from selected news footage, powerfully chronicles the Bush administration's rush path to war in Iraq.

The release of LEADING TO WAR pushes the boundaries of film distribution beyond the new media strategies of even the most forward-thinking Hollywood studios. Taking a page from the Web 2.0 playbook, the producers of LEADING TO WAR are offering the complete film online for free via progressive streaming or download at http://www.leadingtowar.com/.

This is a far more powerful distribution system than is possible in theaters, as this release is available on demand, around the world. To support this international push, the film is subtitled in an unprecedented 19 languages.

The model is similar to that of a classic tiered Web 2.0 service like the photo sharing site Flickr.com. The product is provided for free, attracting a large number of users. An enhanced product is then offered to customers seeking a premium experience. For Flickr, it's more storage for photos, with fewer restrictions. For LEADING TO WAR, the premium experience is watching the film on DVD, which is available for purchase on the website via Amazon.com.

This new business model is what noted venture capitalist and blogger Fred Wilson named "The Freemium Business Model," which has been widely cited in leading business publications and blogs:

"Give your service away for free, possibly ad supported but
maybe not, acquire a lot of customers very efficiently through
word of mouth, referral networks, organic search marketing,
etc, then offer premium priced value added services or an
enhanced version of your service to your customer base."

For LEADING TO WAR, the DVD -- the premium product -- provides the highest quality viewing experience. The expectation is that DVD sales will be significantly increased by the higher viewership and awareness which only the free availability can attract.

This "Freemium" strategy is working. Notable comments online include:

"This is an amazing film. Let's buy DVDs to support these guys," "I'm buying the DVD for my parents," and "I will show this DVD to as many people as I can, and I will save it for my 3 year old son for his future watching."

In conjunction with the film, a companion website, www.LeadingToWar.com, examines the strategies and rhetorical techniques used by Bush officials. The film and website create the most comprehensive online resource about the build-up to the Iraq War.

To enhance the availability of LEADING TO WAR around the world, the film utilizes the Akamai Content Delivery Network, with 20,000 "edge servers" worldwide. This improves the quality of the streaming as well as the speed of download in virtually every country.

"We are amazed at the initial results," said producer Lewis Wheeler. "Within days of LeadingToWar.com going live, the film was viewed in each of the 19 subtitled languages, and within 2 weeks the site was visited from 142 different countries."

LEADING TO WAR was directed by Barry Hershey (whose first feature film, "The Empty Mirror," premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival) and was edited by two-time Emmy Award winner Marc Grossman.
